A look inside Faversham's historic homes

The Faversham Society's Open House scheme starts tomorrow (Saturday July 2). It is the longest-running event of its kind in the country, now in its 42nd year.

Fleur de Lis, Preston Street, Faversham: one of the Faversham Society's 30 buildings to visit during the three Saturdays of 2011's Open House event
It's a great chance to take a look round some fascinating historic buildings, many of them not usually open to the public because they are someone's home; Faversham boasts many listed buildings and several are among the 30 properties open to view.
Open House is being held on the first three Saturdays of July: 2, 9 and 16. Admission to all the properties over the three days is by a handbook, costing £7.50. Not all properties are open all day, and not all are open on all three Saturdays, so you need to get your handbook in good time and plan your visits.
The booklet includes historical and architectural notes on each property, directions and opening times. It is available now from the Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre.
For more information, or to obtain a handbook, call in to the Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre, 10-13 Preston Street, Faversham ME13 8NS; call 01795 534542; or email ticfaversham@btconnect.com marking your email "Open House".
Comments
More than 4,000 visitors viewed the properties open to the public as part of the Faversham Society's Open House scheme this year, an increase of 15 per cent over visits in 2010, I'm told. Thirty fascinating properties in and around the town – most of them not normally open to the public – were open and proved an irresistible draw to the record numbers over the three weekends.
