I'm gonna knock up some posters I think- put them up in windows around town. Can we all agree on a night to advertise for it...say the first Monday of the month? Anyone any other suggestions?
Haven't done it before either but I am told the library should be all geared up to help us out.

OK folks, new book group posters have been put up around town today. With little help from a lovely lady in the Alexander Centre to distribute them, hopefully we should get some interest soon.
The general consensus seems to be that the ideal number for a group is around 10-12 for enough variation without people being drowned out.
So, as soon as we get some numbers I guess we need to arrange a meeting so we can organise how we are going to pick our books!

I was thinking of a nice pub and thought about that one down Abbey Street. If we can get a few ideas I will approach the pub if you like.

The Phoenix? Sounds as good as any. Cool, hopefully we can get things moving. No replies yet to posters, but early days and some won't be up yet.

We got 2 takers so far from the posters so will keep you posted as we closer to the target number. Any news from your friend Fiona?
And is Shiona still keeping up with us?

That would be great if you didnt mind- not sure of a date though as we are still a few short. Might be best to make a date to start and then just see how we get on with the few so far? Can always add others later. It did occur to me that I put posters up in August- might be we can catch a few more once the hol season is over?

2 more takers this weekend which makes 7 of us so far. Think perhaps we should get moving? I ahve a half day at work on Wednesday so I'll head to library and see if I can order a first block of books (or how long it takes to do so) so we have something to hand out when we get together. Then I can let you know to go ahead and talk to pub/ arrange a date when we know when the books will come in.

Ok, so one of the new recruits has said that the Phoenix does pub quiz on the first and third mon of each month, so that puts a spanner in the works. I also have a feeling they do a knitting group and some other stuff so is there any chance you could find out what nights they have available without organised things going on? For me Mon and Tues would be best as my rota has rolling late shifts in the latter parts of the week. Then we can find a night/date that isn't too far away but gives people a chance to get organised.
Getting excited now- it looks like this may actually happen!

yes I'll try tomorrow. The Ship in West Street looks quite good as well so I will give them a call.

yes , I rang the Bear Inn. They have a book club meet on Thursday so I suggested Monday or Tuesday and they were quite happy for us to meet there. The Ship in is closing and I couldn't reach The pheonix. They did say we could go and have a look at the venue.

Great! Think we need to just get everyone together now. Lets book the Bear for a Tuesday some time soon and then we can sort out if we want to keep it as the venue or change it during the first meet. I have ordered a couple of titles from the library but they may take a couple of weeks to come in so it may be we have to have the first meet without books to organise everything and then I can just email everyone to collect the books once they come in. How about we say the 30th August- is that enough notice for everyone do you think? Or do you think too close to the bank hol? We may have a chance of some books being available by then though. Can I leave that to you to book Fiona?
Also, do you guys (hi HF btw) have email addresses I can use? It would be easier to mail everyone all at once rather than bouncing between the message board and gmail.

Hi , I'll organise The Bear. Re the books it might be worth considering cheap ones on Ebay and Amazon where they can be bought for a pound.

I'm ok for the 30th

Ace, thanks. Good idea for the cheap books- I just need some ideas for what kind of books we all actually want to read! I'll emil evryone to set up the date for 30th, but I'll wait for you to confirm the bear is available. x

might be an idea to get everyone to say what books or perhaps make a list of 5?
By fionaalison at 19:35 on 19/08/11
Report
Yes was thinking of us all making a short list/all choosing books to then be taken in turn at random. Especially if we are using the library because you have to book those ahead. Or to allow time for postage if ordering from Amazon etc.
If we set the first meeting we can make the list then, I will put out an email telling people to bring suggestions. Then if we have something from library we can give it out, if not we can pursue one of the books chosen that night.
If you let me know about the Bear, then i can send out the date to everyone and we can go for it!

Hi Bonnie,
We did indeed get everyone together, but only once i'd put posters up in local shop windows.
We now have a nice group going and we meet on the first Monday of each month in the Bear pub, Faversham market place. You would be very welcome to join us if you want to come along. So far we have done current fiction novels but this month decided to go a bit more classic for a change, so we are reading The Great Gatsby before the movie comes out. Its a short one so you may be able to catch up- next meeting 7.30pm on 6th Feb.
If you're interested, please let me know- here, or my email address is lauravfinlayson@gmail.com
