The Faversham Society has been following closely the proposals to extend gravel extraction operations on to the marshes and there is no doubt that feelings are running very high on this issue.
Not only is this area historic grazing marshland and a valuable wildlife habitat, but it makes an important visual contribution to the Faversham landscape. Nature lovers, hikers, birdwatchers and families simply seeking fresh air and space have walked and enjoyed the marshes for many years and excavation would harm the appearance of the area for a significant period.
We have concerns too that the 300 year old pub at Hollowshore – an existing business well used by local people and visitors – could suffer from restricted access and the general spoiling of its unique aspect.
Whilst acknowledging unreservedly that Brett's have been extracting gravel on sites around the town for many years and restoration work has usually been of high quality, in the final analysis the site is an SSSI and land with such a designation should not be considered for gravel extraction. The Faversham Society has therefore made representations to Kent County Council opposing the proposed excavation at Ham Farm and Hollowshore.
