Cross set on fire in Faversham market place

The Easter cross set up in Faversham was set on fire twice last night (Good Friday, April 22).

The symbolic cross was carried during Faversham Churches Together members' procession of witness and then set up in the market place
It had been placed in the market place by members of Faversham’s Churches Together after their Easter procession of witness.
It is believed the two attacks were caught on CCTV. A blaze was put out by the fire service, and police attended the scene.

In a statement on Saturday morning, a police spokesman told Faversham People that officers had arrested a 54-year-old man from Faversham on suspicion of arson and that he was being held in police custody.
The seven-foot wooden cross was set on fire twice, at 8 and 8.40pm.
