FAVERSHAM ABC boxer Eddie Mount is through to the semi-finals of the National Schoolboys Championship.

Mount, 14-years-old and the current Southern Counties class three under 46kg champion, secured a last four berth courtesy of Sunday's exciting victory over Western Counties champ Jacob Croot in Bristol.

Croot, boxing for Broadplain Police ABC, came out strong from the start, pushing Mount back and taking the first round emphatically, 16 points to two.

The Bristol boxer then started the second round strongly, but Mount's superior fitness soon began to tell and going into the final round it was 21-15 to Croot, the fight now very much in the balance.

The contest was turned on its head in the final round as the Faversham youngster rose to the occasion, winning the round to seal an overall 31-27 points victory.

To get this far in the competition Mount has already overcome Sussex champion Rhys Verlander, from the Hastings and Westport club, and also Surrey number one Luke Thompson.

Eddie and his entourage will now travel to Feltham over the weekend for the semi-final.

"I think he can go all the way and win the competition outright," said coach Gary Spring. "It's not often a boxer with so few fights under his belt does so well in a national competition.

"But whatever happens on Sunday he has a bright future ahead of him and is definitely a talent to watch."

If Mount does lift the championship he will go on to represent England in the Three Nations competition.

Faversham ABC welcome anyone who wants to train at the club. Based in Conduit Street, Faversham, the club is also looking for sponsorship. More information from Gary Spring on 07988835400.
