The Faversham Society is presenting a series of short talks titled Faversham in Five at the Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre in Preston Street to mark England's first Civic Day on Saturday June 25.

Starting at 10.30am, hourly through to 2.30pm, five local experts will each give a 15-minute talk on aspects of local life which have shaped the town. Afterwards visitors will have the chance to ask questions and talk to the experts. There will be no charge but booking is essential. As a bonus there will be free admission to the entire museum for both Saturday and Sunday of that weekend.

Civic Day has been organised by Civic Voice, the national charity for the civic movement in England.

Civic societies across the country will be holding events to celebrate their area and keep it distinctive. Everyone is invited to join in and learn more about where they live.

"Celebrate the things you feel proud of"

Faversham Society chairman Jenny Parry said: "We hope as many people as possible will join us on Civic Day. We want to celebrate the things you feel proud of and champion what's important to our community. Please come to enjoy the fun, perhaps learn a little about the town and share your views."

What is Civic Voice?

The charity's president, Griff Rhys Jones, said: "Civic Voice believes everyone has the right to live somewhere they can feel proud of. At this time of financial uncertainty and an increasing desire to involve local people in decision-making it has never been more important for everyone to understand their local area.

"What do you want to protect? What do you want to improve? If we are going to ensure that our villages, towns and cities give everybody living in them a good quality of life, we need everyone to get involved."
