Plum Day is Sunday August 14 at Brogdale, home of the National Fruit Collections
There are 350 varieties of plum with exotic names such as Oullins Gage and Coe's Golden Drop, in all shapes and colours, grown at Brogdale.
Sally Roger, marketing manager at Brogdale, said: "Because plums are picked when ripe on the tree they don't travel or store well so they have fallen out of favour amongst the UK public. At this time of year however they are simply fantastic, a real taste of a British summer and we should be eating more of them.
"If you would like advice on selecting a variety of plum for your garden then come and speak to our expert guides and they will help you find the perfect variety. Or see some of our many plums in the collection on display and take some home to enjoy."
Plum day runs from 10am till 5pm and throughout the day there will be guided tours on foot or by tractor trailer, or visitors can choose from one of three self-guided walks. Along the way there are new shelters to stop and enjoy the orchards with information boards provided.
• Guided tours and self-guided walks of the orchards at Brogdale are available daily. Other attractions include the Market Place which offers relaxed shopping with fresh local produce such as apple juice, cider, meats, cheese, pies, pickles and jams.
