Police are asking for witnesses to a serious crash on the M2 this morning (Tuesday February 21).

The crash happened at about 9.10am on the coastbound side of the M2 between junctions 4 and 5 (Gillingham and Sittingbourne).

A white foreign-registered heavy-goods vehicle with a red cab is said to have been at a standstill on the hard shoulder when a black Nissan Qashqai saloon reportedly ran into it.

As paramedics tended the Nissan driver, the motorway was closed in both directions so the air ambulance could land. The man has serious injuries and has been taken to a London hospital.

Kent Police's serious collision investigation unit would like to speak to anyone who saw this crash, or the events leading up to it, and would ask anyone with information to call 01622 798538.

At 11.35am police were advising drivers to avoid the M2 coastbound between junctions 5 and 4 for the next couple of hours and divert to the M20 where possible as there were significant delays in the area.

They reported that lane two of the coastbound carriageway had just been opened and traffic was moving, and that the London-bound side was fully open.
