School's statement:
This year has seen progress across all subject areas and the hard work of the staff and students has been rewarded in these results which reflect the high expectations we have of our students.
It is always hard to pick out individuals as every student sets themselves challenging targets and works hard to achieve them, however, in terms of attainment the following deserve special mention:
Andrew Holsman: 13 A* to C passes, including 10 at A* or A;
Corrina Winterburn: 13 A* to C passes, including five at A*/A;
Martyna Wisniewska: 11 A* to C passes, including four at A*/A;
David Shelley: 12 A* to C passes, including two at A*/A;
Anna Shepherd: 14 A* to C passes, including six at A*/A;
Jamie Smith: 13 A* to C passes, including two at A*/A;
Monty Streek: 11 A*to C passes, including five at A*/A;
Poppy Kemp: 13 A* to C passes, including two at A*/A;
Jack Bullen: 12 A* to C passes, including one A;
Reuben Heather: 16 A* to C passes, including two at A*/A;
Shannon Thompson: 15 A* to C passes, including four at A*/A.
Headteacher Catrin Woodend ascribed the achievement to a range of successful intervention strategies which were put in place by senior staff and by a real change in the culture of the students.
"The students are not afraid to be seen putting in the necessary effort. Their hard work and the work of the dedicated staff have paid off," Mrs Woodend said.
She was delighted that results were very good across the board, with 96 per cent of the year-11 students leaving the Abbey with success at GCSEs.
"As well as the record number of high-flyers achieving A* and A GCSEs, we were delighted with the achievements of our students; some with identified learning difficulties also outperformed what we could have reasonably expected of them."
Mrs Woodend, who joined the Abbey in 2006, commented further: "This is a particularly pleasing and poignant set of results as this year group began their academic journey at the very same time as myself in 2006, and I have watched them grow and develop into mature young adults whose hard work has culminated in a magnificent set of results, and I am delighted to congratulate them all for their effort and commitment."
